01Getting Started
First, you need an account. Canva has a free and a Pro version. The free version is great for beginners testing the waters; Pro is recommended for serious digital product creators โ it has far more features.
- Choose your plan โ Pro is highly recommended, but free is fine to start.
- Follow the prompts to complete registration.
- Confirm your account by email and you're set.
To start a design, press Create a Design and either choose a pre-sized project (Instagram Reel, Facebook Post, Etsy Banner, eBook, Document) or choose Custom Size and enter your measurements. You can also start from a template โ search the template library, start from scratch, or upload a template you've purchased.
02Your Workspace
Learning the tools inside a project makes designing faster and easier. The text toolbar gives you: font choice, size, and color; bold/italic/underline/strikethrough; upper/lowercase toggle; alignment; bullet points; letter spacing and line height; animation; transparency; position; copy-paste styles; and undo/redo.
03Your Toolset
The left sidebar holds: design templates; the Elements library (graphics, photos, videos, clipart); text options; your Brand Hub (Pro only โ store logos, colors, fonts for consistent branded content); drawing tools; your uploads; your projects and folders; and app connections.
Uploading your own photos and videos
- Tap the Uploads icon
- Select Upload Files
- Locate the files and select Add
- Tap the uploaded files to add them to your design (or drag and drop on Mac)
Photo grids and frames
Grids create a clean, professional aesthetic: find them in Elements, drag and drop your images in, then adjust the spacing slider. Frames let you add or crop images and videos into shapes โ including phone and laptop mockups, great for business posts. Find them under Elements โ Frames, place one on your project, and drag your photo or video in.
Editing tools
- Spacing โ increase or decrease space between text and lines.
- Transparency โ change the opacity of a photo, text, or element.
- Effects โ add flare and make text pop (try the Splice option).
- Animate โ animate text, photos, elements, or your entire design.
Position, layers, and locking
Every element has its own layer. Use the Position tool to send elements forward or backward, align them, or drag layers to re-order. Lock elements you don't want to accidentally move while working on others โ select the item and tap the lock icon (tap again to unlock). If your screen is low on space, hidden tools live behind the three dots.
04Font Pairing & Hyperlinks
Choosing fonts that pair well is crucial. Some of Ms. Hood's favorites: Tan Mon Cheri + Open Sans, DM Serif Display + DM Sans, Playfair Display + Lato, Black Mango + Garet, Safira March + Abhaya Libre, Alata + Poppins, Bauer Bodoni + Body Grotesque Slim, Six Caps + Poppins. Pinterest is a great place to search "Canva font pairing" for more combinations.
Hyperlinks let you link text, images, elements, or buttons to a website, document, or another page of your project โ perfect for big documents like planners. Right-click an element โ Link โ enter the URL. For text, highlight it and the link icon appears. You can also link to another page of your design instead of a website.
05Building Your Brand Kit
Canva's Brand Kit (Pro) stores your brand's design assets in one place: click the Brand tab โ + Add New โ name it โ add your brand colors, fonts, logos, graphics, and brand photos.
06Building Your Logo
Your logo comes straight out of your brand kit work โ colors, typography, and iconography working together. Pro tip from Ms. Hood: build a brand icon too, for the places where your entire logo doesn't fit.
