The Cosmetology License
In Oregon, a Cosmetology license allows a cosmetologist to perform a wide range of services across three fields: Nail Technology, Hair Design, and Esthetics. Each specialty area has its own scope, and some services require additional certifications.
Nail Technology
Scope Includes
- Gel application
- Builder gel
- Acrylic application
- Manicures
- Pedicures
Hair Design
Scope Includes
- Chemical treatments (color, perms)
- Shampooing & conditioning
- Styling
- Trimming & cutting
- Microlinks
- Extensions
โ The Hair Design license covers basic barbering services, which is why an in-depth Barbering license also exists.
Natural Hair Care
Scope Includes
- Braiding
- Extensions (wigs, bundles, feeding weave into braids, clip-ins)
- Customizing extensions (coloring and/or cutting)
- Shampooing & conditioning
Esthetics
Scope Includes
- Skin care & facials
- Waxing
- Makeup artistry
Esthetics Specialties

Important Note
Each specialty area within the cosmetology license has its own scope. Some services require additional certifications โ for example, advanced chemical peels, paramedical tattooing, or an instructor license.
