Why You Need
A Website

Booking systems change. Your domain never should. A short module on the one link that holds your whole business together.

The lesson that cost me thousands

A Ms. Hood story

When I was building Lash Lab, I did what most new artists do: I put my booking system's link everywhere. My Instagram bio. My Google listing. And then I went big โ€” I printed thousands of business cards and postcards with that booking link and a QR code on them, and handed them out at every event, every appointment, every vendor table.

Then I outgrew that booking system and switched to a better one. The old link went dead overnight. Every single card, every postcard, every QR code I'd paid for โ€” pointing at nothing. Clients scanning it got an error page. I threw away money and, worse, I threw away bookings.

That's why I tell every student: put your website on the card, never the booking link. A domain you own can point anywhere you want, forever. A booking link belongs to someone else's company.

Booking link vs. your own domain

โŒ Printing your booking link

  • Owned by the booking company, not you
  • Dies the day you switch systems (and you will switch)
  • Ugly, long, hard to remember โ€” app.something.com/yourname-12345
  • Shows only your calendar โ€” no story, no portfolio, no policies
  • Zero SEO value: Google ranks their site, not yours

โœ… Printing your own domain

  • Owned by you, renewed yearly for about $15
  • Never changes โ€” redirect it to any booking system, any time
  • Short, clean, on-brand โ€” yourbusinessname.com
  • Houses everything: booking, policies, portfolio, contact, shop
  • Builds SEO so clients searching "lashes near me" find you

What a website actually does for you

A website isn't a vanity project โ€” it's the hub every other piece of your business plugs into. Here are the six jobs it does:

๐Ÿ”Ž

SEO โ€” gets you found

Google ranks pages that have your business name, services, city, and keywords on them. A booking calendar has none of that. Your website is what shows up for "volume lashes Portland."

โ„น๏ธ

Information page

Who you are, where you are, your hours, your services and prices, your policies, aftercare, FAQs. One place you send everyone instead of answering the same DMs all day.

๐Ÿ”—

Houses your links

Instagram, TikTok, Google reviews, text list, gift cards, your shop โ€” all under one roof. Your link-in-bio can simply be your domain.

๐Ÿ“…

Houses your booking system

Embed or link your booking page from a "Book Now" button. When you switch systems, you change one button โ€” not thousands of cards.

๐Ÿ“ธ

Portfolio

Your best sets, before & afters, styles you specialize in. Clients decide to book from your work, not your calendar.

๐Ÿš€

Projects & growth

Training, products, events, collabs, a second location. Every new thing you build gets a page โ€” the domain stays the same while the business grows around it.

How the pieces fit

Everything you print, post, or say out loud points to the domain. The domain points to whatever you're using right now.

The rule. If it's going on paper, on a sign, or on a product, it's the domain. Booking links only ever live on the website, where they take ten seconds to change.

Set it up in one afternoon

  1. Buy your domain. Search your business name at a registrar (Namecheap, GoDaddy, Squarespace Domains, or through your website builder). Keep it short, spell-able, and .com if you can get it. Buy it even if you're not ready to build the site โ€” parking it costs nothing extra.
  2. Pick a builder. Wix and Squarespace are the easiest for a service business; Shopify if you'll sell products; a booking system's built-in site is fine only if your own domain is connected to it. (Ms. Hood uses Wix for Lash Lab's site and Shopify for the shop.)
  3. Connect the domain. In your builder, go to Domains โ†’ Connect โ†’ follow the DNS steps. Takes 10 minutes and one cup of coffee while it propagates.
  4. Build the essentials โ€” five sections is plenty: Home (who + where + Book Now), Services & prices, Portfolio, Policies & aftercare, Contact. Add more later.
  5. Point "Book Now" at your booking system. That button is the only place your booking link lives.
  6. Set up redirects. Most builders let you create short links like yourbusinessname.com/book or /policies. Put those on cards and QR codes โ€” they'll keep working through every system change.
  7. Update everything else to the domain. Instagram bio, TikTok, Google Business Profile website field, email signature, text-list auto-replies.
Already printed with a booking link? Don't toss the cards. Add a small sticker with your domain, or set up a free QR redirect service so the old code forwards to your site. Then never print without the domain again.

Your domain checklist

Quick check: you're about to print 500 business cards. Which link goes on them?

This module pairs with lesson 2 of Business Start-Up Strategies and the Marketing & Branding guide.

Website, branding, booking, and getting found on Google are all part of Lash Lab's business training.
